소양자: 가시와 함께 장미, 슬픔과 함께 영원한 사랑

장미의 아름다움과 매력
우리집에서 차로 약 45분 걸려서 가는 조그만 동네, 스타인휴어트( Steinfuerth) 는 1800년 부터 장미 단지를 만들어서, 꽃, 관상용, 고급 장미 기름을 세계각국에 팔고, 허브 약으로도 쓰는 모법적인 마을이다. 겸해서 오래된 장미박물관도 있다. 가정집에서부터 온 동네가 다 장미밭이고, 온동네가 장미향이 풍풍 나고, 약 1.500 종류를 재배하여, 세계에 보급하고 있다고 한다. 장미에 대해 잘은 모르나 그리스, 로마 때부터 있었으며, 아름다운 형태와 향기로 유명하며, 서양에서는 사랑의 표시로 최고로 꼽히는 꽃이다.
장미는 호광식물이라 뜨겁고, 강한 햇볕을 좋아하며, 통풍이 없는 곳에, 하루에 8시간이상의 햇볕을 쬐게 해야 하고, 물을 충분히 뿌리까지 주어야 잘 자라고, 아름다운 꽃을 여러 번 피운다. 밑거름은 우분, 계분, 왕겨, 깻묵, 낙엽 등을 잘 섞어서 줘야하고, 꽃이 핀 다음에는 잘 잘라주면 다시 새순이 나와서 꽃을 많이 피워준다. 종류마다 관리가 다르고, 자르는 방식도 간단하지 않다. 서양에서는 프로포즈를 하거나 연애를 할 때는 빨간 장미가 필수이며, 꽃다발의 장 수는 반드시 홀수 여야 실례가 안 된다.
장미 박물관에서는 이미 문호 궤테(Goethe, 1749 - 1832)의 '들에 핀 장미화'시 외에도, 장미에 대한 열정과 연구를 많이 했다. 예를 들어 , 어느 장미꽃 위에 생기는 또 다른 비정상적인 (?) 꽃송이를 관찰하고, 그 원인을 설명하려고 까지 한 흔적을 볼 수 있었고, 나폴레옹의 부인 조세핀(1763 – 1814) 은 1796년에 나폴레옹과 결혼하고 나서, 큰 장미정원을 만들고, 향수를 만들게 했다는 설명도 있었다. '가시 없는 장미가 없듯이, 슬픔없는 사랑도 없다' 라는 어느 누구의 명언도 보았다. 1943년에 유명한 ' 어린왕자' 를 쓴, 프랑스조종사, 앙투안 드 생텍쥐페리( Antoine de Saint- Exupery)도 장미를 통해 만드는 좋은 인연을 행복의 지침으로 삼았다. 그 문장을 일부 여기에 소개한다;
장미는 어린왕자가 처음 본 꽃이며 처음으로 자신의 별을 떠나 여행할 때 맘에 걸려했던 대상이다. 또한, 지구를 떠나 자신의 별로 돌아가려고 결심한 결정적인 이유가 되죠. 서로가 좋은 의미가 되는 관계를 맺으면 이보다 더 따뜻하고 행복한게 또 있을까요???
그리고 사진으로 보실 유명한 화가들(로크너, 레노아, 클레, 모네, 고흐, 크로야, 워터하우스, 클림트 등등...) 이 다 장미를 모티브로 해서 그린 그림들이다. 언뜻 보면 그림들이 다 다르지만, 결국은 장미의 아름다움으로 '불이' 가 되고 만다.
박물관의 입구에서 기념으로 뿌려 준 장미 향기가 지금도 내 몸에서 잔잔하게 코에 스며든다. 온종일을 그 동네에서 보내며 즐긴 소중한 앎과 경험으로, 이젠 장미 한 송이를 볼 때 마다 가슴이 뛸 것 같고, 귀하고 반가운 사람을 만나는 것처럼, 열렬히 사랑해야겠다. 아는 것 만큼 보이고, 알면 못 보던 것까지 많이 보이는 좋은 체험을 했다. 이젠 살다가 갑자기 내 자신이 초라해 지고, 갑자기 화려해지고 싶으면, 그곳으로 빨리 달려가야겠다. ( 웃음)

생화는 만나기 힘들어도 저는 거의 매일 장미꽃을 만나지요.
병든 늙으신 노모를 위해

아름다운 장미꽃이 수십 송이가 화려하게 피어 있답니다.
